Every photo session is special, but this one will always have a special place in my heart. Meet Meg. Labrador Retriever. Old soul. Unwavering service dog to Erik. It is my job and my passion to capture personality and connection in my camera, but these two - these two really raised the bar. Meg is a service dog from Canine Companions for Independence, the largest non-profit provider of assistance dogs. From the minute I met this pair I knew they were special. The kind of special that makes you pause, take a deep breath, and remember just how lucky you are to photograph the most amazing dogs and meet such wonderful people. Erik's mom writes, "For the most part, Erik is non-verbal. But he makes vocal approximations that are consistent. Most people don't understand him, but she does. Things like bed, down, don't, ok, car.... So she's given him the enjoyment of spontaneous language, and him understanding that language gets something for him."
A boy and his dog make a glorious pair:
No better friendship is found anywhere,
For they talk and they walk and they run and they play,
And they have their deep secrets for many a day;
And that boy has a comrade who thinks and who feels,
Who walks down the road with a dog at his heels.
Erik and Meg - I am indebted to you for sharing with me the sheer magic of your relationship.
